Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help maintain a cleaner chimney flue.

Selecting Proper Firewood

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory are excellent choices for burning due to their dense composition, which produces high heat and less smoke. These wood types, when seasoned properly, generate little creosote, helping keep your flue cleaner.

Avoid using softwoods like pine, which is resin-rich and can cause creosote buildup more quickly. Aim for wood that has been seasoned for at least six months to ensure a clean burn.

Seasoning Your Firewood

Seasoning firewood involves drying it to reduce moisture content, which results in a cleaner burn and less creosote. Stack wood in a sunny, well-ventilated area and cover only the top to allow proper airflow, reducing moisture.

Using unseasoned or damp wood can produce excess smoke and creosote, which may lead to chimney blockages and increased fire risk.

Storage Tips for Firewood

Store your firewood off the ground and away from the house to prevent pests and promote airflow. Use a tarp or wood shed to cover the top while leaving the sides open for ventilation.

Avoid storing firewood indoors, as it can introduce insects and moisture problems. Proper storage ensures your wood remains dry and ready for use.
